Help Knee Pain with ShockWave Therapy
Extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) is a noninvasive treatment that involves delivery of high energy shock waves to injured soft tissue to reduce pain and promote healing. ESWT is a treatment of choice for many patients present with chronic knee pain and like to avoid surgery and hasn’t responded to more conservative treatments.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
(ESWT)Extracorporeal Shock wave therapy it is a non invasive and advanced treatment that uses acoustic shockwave to break down soft tissue calcification, enhance collagen synthesis, release growth factors and stimulate your body’s healing process to improve pain and help stay active. This therapy enhances blood circulation and accelerates healing of stubborn musculoskeletal conditions in bone, tendons, ligaments and muscle.
DOES IT HURT?
Whether ESWT hurts and how much varies from person to person. Most patients describe it as a little uncomfortable but not really painful.
We customize the treatment to each patient’s personal pain tolerance. We will start out at a low level and increase it gradually, at which point we’ll hold steady at the therapeutic range for about 2,000 pulses. The process takes about 15 minutes.
Most patients feel results right away. Our protocol for chronic knee pain is between 12-14 treatments over six to 12 weeks for complete healing and lasting symptom resolution. Patients usually feel immediate relief after first treatment.
It is not uncommon to feel a bit sore afterward and have some bruising at the treatment area. After the procedure, it is best to avoid anti-inflammatory medications, such as Advil because stimulating the inflammation cascade is part of the healing process activated by ESWT. Other than that, you can go about your normal activities, generally including exercise if you feel up to it.

The Benefits of ShockWave Therapy
Nutrient blood flow is necessary to start and maintain the repair processes of damaged tissue. The application of acoustic waves creates capillary microruptures in tendon and bone.
Mast cells are one of the key components of the inflammatory process. Their activity may be increased by using pervasive acoustic waves.
The production of a sufficient amount of collagen is a necessary precondition for the repair processes of the damaged myoskeletal and ligamentous structures. Shockwave therapy accelerates procollagen synthesis.
Calcium build-up is most often the result of micro-tears or other trauma to a tendon. Acoustic waves break up the existing calcifications. Dispersion of Pain Mediator
Substance P is a neurotransmitter that mediates pain information through the C-fibers. This neuropeptide is generally associated with intense, persistent and chronic pain.
Trigger points are the principal cause of pain in the back, neck, shoulder and limbs. Delivered acoustic energy unblocks the calcium pump and thus reverses the metabolic crisis in the myofilaments and releases the trigger points.
